Heck, it feels like ages since Tekno Miles destroyed us with his single ‘Pana’. The song which was released in July 2016, marked the peak of Tekno’s powers, as the singer capitalized on the limitless potential in his arsenal, to create a record that was both a phenomenon and a cultural movement.
‘Pana’, produced by Krizbeatz, penetrated Africa in a way that no other song did. From Johannesburg to Harare, the legend and music of Tekno flew, creating a new African prince that many flocked to connect with. He won awards from different countries, increased his fan base, and dropped a follow-up single titled ‘Diana’.

With the benefit of time, no one would disagree that ‘Diana’, didn’t quite get the same response and acceptance that ‘Pana’ enjoyed. It lifted off the floor and was circulated by the media. People fell in love with it, but it was of a lower stock than its predecessor, and the numbers showed. Another song, ‘Rara’ was released, but it was a sleeper hit. Something political for the underground.
But ‘Pana’ was not one yet. The power of the single attracted Columbia Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment, who threw their weight behind the song and offered Tekno a deal. That deal was signed and sealed in January 2017, at their New York offices, where Tekno travelled with label head, Ubi Franklin, and investor Paul Okoye.
Tekno was offered a 3-single deal. Columbia records will distribute ‘Pana’ in the US and other markets. Tekno will record two more singles and the label will release, publish and distribute. For his troubles, he gets an upfront fee, and then an agreed percentage on sales.

It is that upfront fee that he screamed on Instagram: “4 million dollars”. He lied. Columbia Records didn’t give Tekno $4 million. They won’t give him up to a million dollars.
But with the deal signed, Tekno will have to work closely with the A&R executives at Columbia to recreate the magic of ‘Pana’. That’s the huge ask forTekno, but with that level of talent, he should step up to the plate.
But it appears to be taking his sweet time. Between ‘Pana’ and today, a number of hit sogs have relegated his shine. Runtown has cornered the market with ‘Mad Over You’, Wizkid is pushing boundaries with ‘Daddy Yo’, and Davido has a new hit song titled ‘If’.

Tekno needs to come through with new music, and get back in the mix with something banging. But it will take a while. The process of releasing under a major label is complex and takes too much time. At every level of the process, executives and top shots will have to approve and sign off on it. If the song scales through the processes, then a release date will be agreed, and a roll-out plan devised.
All of these takes time. And the fans cannot wait forever. Tekno needs to speed up that process, by recording and sending in more music. The clock is ticking. We are ticking. The industry is ticking.
